Muscogee (Creek) Nation to start accepting Storm Shelter Program applications Aug. 1

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources Storm Shelter Program was created through MCN National Council legislation TR-17019 in February, with $100,000 being appropriated for the program.
The program allows for the purchase and installation of storm shelters for Muscogee (Creek) citizens. Eligible citizens need to be homeowners living within the MCN boundaries. Mobile homeowners must own the home and the land where the home sits.
Preference will be given to elders ages 65 and older, the handicapped or disabled, veterans and those living in rural areas. Limit one per homeowner/household.

DANR will begin accepting applications Aug. 1. Applications will be available on tribal campus, the Southern Regional Office, and online in late July.
Approved applicants will receive an approval letter and the contractor will contact the applicant to schedule installation. The Nation will make the payments directly to the contractor.
For more information, please contact Rachael Locust at: (918) 549-2555.

  1. Storm shelter applicants must “own the land and mobile home” as in it must be “paid off”.?
    Free and clear?

    1. Hello Kelli,

No, there can be mortgages on the property. It just has to be in your name. If you have any more questions, please call Rachael Locust at: 918) 549-2555.

      Mvto.

  2. Does MCN have a contract with a particular storm shelter company or do the applicants seek out bids then turn into Ms. Locust? (Of course meaning if application is approved and all the necessary information is processed correctly)

    1. Hello Charlene,

Once an applicant is approved, the Nation forwards the applicant’s information and payment to the company they are working with. The storm shelter company will call the home owner to schedule the install. There is no extra work placed on citizens.

  3. I have a storm shelter but it is so old and cracked. It is full of water. It is no good . So if it was removed, the hole is already dug. Please consider me as an applicant as I have 4 small grand children that live with me. The rest of my 4 neighbors dont have a storm shelter, so if I had one I would share with them aswel. What a blessing.. I own the home and it is in my name. Thank you sooooo every much.

    1. Hello Melody,

  5. Hello
We live in the Muskogee Creek district but we’re Cherokee. We’ve always applied through Creeks for services. They installed a septic system for about 10 years ago. Being Cherokee are we eligible to apply for the shelter? I’m disabled.

    1. Hello Deneisa,

To be eligible for the Storm Shelter Program, you have to be an enrolled Muscogee (Creek) citizen.
